Description

A Chippendale Carved And Red-Painted Chest Of Drawers

Connecticut, Late 18th Century

with three short drawers, the center drawer carved with rosette, over three graduated long drawers, shaped apron and feet.

Height 39 1/2 x width 37 1/2 x depth 18 1/8 inches.

Condition
presents well; retaining wonderful old paint with nice signs of patina including crackling and surface build-up; the top with some rings and darkened marks, and the edges with some scuffing commensurate with age and use; one long drawer and one short drawer with lip repair to drawer face, and another drawer with a loss to corner; a few scattered occasional patches to drawer face edges; with an unusual form of construction, the apron appears to be carved from a drawer face which has been affixed to the case- it was suggested that this piece may have originally been the upper portion to a Queen Anne high chest, and was retrofitted or altered in the late 18th century to conform to Federal styling; the bottom of the backboard has been more crudely cut away to mirror front apron; repaired breaks to both foot facings; brasses are later, with evidence of former screw holes; one pull missing bail handle, and two other pulls each missing washer to screw; center short drawer retaining lock
